News

Children in low-income areas of Venezuela continue to suffer from acute malnutrition. This was stated by Lesbia Cortez, coordinator of Caritas Venezuela (NGO). Wasting or acute malnutrition is one of the most critical forms of malnutrition in early childhood, as it is associated with a high risk of mortality if cases are not properly identified and treated in a timely manner. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimated that by the end of 2022 in Venezuela nearly 9,000 children under 5 years of age were suffering from acute malnutrition.

A report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), issued in July 2022, revealed that Venezuela is the second country in Latin America with the second highest prevalence of hunger with about 22.9% of its population affected. This percentage was only surpassed by Haiti which ranked first in the list with 47.2 %. The UN affirms that 6.5 million Venezuelans suffer from hunger.
